First, you need to bring the crab in from your porch and defrost it. Yikes!
Then, you pour a whole lot of salt into a large pot. If you have a pot that is larger than the one pictured above it works better.
Next, you must rinse the crab. Beware, your kitchen will smell like ocean while you do this.
After rinsing the crab, stick the whole crab into the pot and fill with water. It is very important that every single part of the crab is covered by water.Parts not covered with water will not cook correctly and you will end up with gooey brown leg meat that tastes icky.
Once the pot is full of water and the crab is submerged, put it on the stove and turn the heat on.
After about 15 minutes, check on your crab. If it has turned bright red like this one it is done!
When the crab is cooked, use scissors to cut off the legs. Then, throw the body away. Supposedly there are parts of the body that you can eat without getting sick, but this author has been told to generally avoid the crab’s body.
Finally, grab scissors and use these to cut apart the crab legs. With your fingers, pull the meat out of the legs, dunk it in melted butter and pop it into your mouth. Enjoy!
You are definitely much braver than I am to be touching that crab … looks like a “man job” to me.
