Land of the Corny

Billboard on the side of the road in South Dakota: The Worlds Only Palace made of corn!

I was driving through South Dakota and it was getting to be dinner time. I figured we might as well stop at the Corn Palace exit, it could be neat to see and probably would have some fast food joints nearby.  Oh, and it was FREE!

As soon as I started to merge right for the exit to Mtichell, SD, home of the World’s ONLY Corn Palace, the protests began. From the passenger seat Kyle says, “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!” He refused to go, saying that it was just a huge, corny, tourist trap.

I replied, “So what, we’re going.”

As we parked at the Corn Palace, Kyle stayed buckled in his passenger seat, refusing to get out.  Eventually I dragged him out and into the beautiful palace of corn.

Disappointingly, the building is not actually built of corn. The structure is your basic brick building. But, they decorate the entire façade with ears and leaves of corn and make it into a different design each year.

Truly, it was quite corny, but hey, totally worth a free five minute trip.
